December 1, Hong Kong

This was our last day in Hong Kong.  I wanted a foot massage and Bill went off to get a hair cut.   All of these "tasks" happened after we needed to satisfy our craving for northern style dumplings.

I found a restaurant that was about 2 or 3 km from our hotel and we decided to metro up and walk back.  Which was a good thing as the walk home took a looooong time and since we were hungry, that would have turned into hangry.  The resto was a little hole in the wall, our favorite type of place, and they had an English menu.  We ordered several different types of dumplings, some in soup and some pan fried.  It was such a "trip home" to Beijing.

The broth was flavorful without being salty and the dumplings were delicious.  The dough was a little thicker than is my desire, but the filling was tasty and you could taste the meat AND the veggies!

We walked home along Nathan Road.  This is the main artery north and south on Kowloon.  The road is 4 or more lanes and very busy.  Along the road are many stores, hotels, banks, businesses, drugstores, AND jewelry stores.  These stores are all over Hong Kong.  Each one offering slightly different, but essentially the same wares.  Ugly, ugly gold jewelry.  Each window had the same display, HUGE, or rather YUGE necklaces with large pendants of whatever the calendar symbol is coming up, I think it was a pig for this year. All the gold was satin finish which is my least favorite.  This predisposes me to dislike what is in the windows!  The bracelets were also huge and quite ugly as well.  They only things that attracted my eye were the pearl stud earrings.  The pearls were huge and beautifully colors and shaped.

We must have wandered into every drugstore looking for some of the dental floss that I like.  I ended up buying an assortment of things hoping that if I couldn't find what I like, I could like what I bought.  NOPE, big disappointment.

After the walk, we went to the hotel and decided that haircut and massage were in the cards.  Luckily, the massage place was immediately across the road from the hotel and Bill knew where his haircut place was so off we went on our separate tasks.

The massage place was empty when I arrived.  I was seated isn't a plush BarcaLounger of a sort and the man sat on an ottoman facing me.  He brought over a large pail of hot water and you soak your feet for a while in a disinfectant sort of solution.  He then dries your feet off and wraps up one in a towel while he works on the other.  The massage was quite strong, but I needed it as my ankles were screaming at me.  He started on the foot rubbing and kneading it with his knuckles then worked his way up to my knees.  I was so tight that he was struggling to get traction in some locations.  All of which was feeling really good.  I could tell he was worried that he was hurting me, but only a few times did he really hit a tender spot.  I could tell by the end he was exhausted so I tipped him very well.

I thought that a foot massage was just that, but no, it also includes a back, neck, and spine massage as well.  He indicated that I should sit on the ottoman and he then worked my back and neck.  OOOOOH that was wonderful too.

I left not really knowing my name, my favorite way to leave a massage!

The side benefit to this was my legs were just fine on the next day's flight.  So lesson there is get a foot and leg massage the day before I have a long flight.

We ate dinner at a dim sum restaurant that was in a nearby mall.  It was tough to find as there are 3 malls connected together all with "Mira" in their names.  We finally found it, and had a really delicious meal. They had soup dumplings, and fried dumplings, and  sauteed pea shoots that were the delight of the meal.
These were the fried dumplings.  Described by another patron as an aircraft carrier of deliciousness
 The fabulous pea shoots
 Sesame noodles
Soup dumplings.

I think the place was called Da Tan Fing or something like that.  There are branches all over the world and reportedly each one is delicious.

We fly the next day to Cairo for 2 days before heading to Luxor for the star of our "cruise".
